Female: Gender (is)

Female: Gender (is)

Inspired by Judith Butler’s “Performative Acts and Gender Constitution: An Essay in Phenomenology and Feminist Theory”, this new theatre piece will explore language, gesture, token and the repetition of these symbols to create an idea of Gender.

The play’s goal will be to encompass the relationships we have with these symbols as the puppeteers, the puppets, the patrons of these performances.

This week will be heavier on the “R” in Research & Development. One of the five days will be allocated to collecting and collating a series of questionnaires which invite individual female identifying people from diverse backgrounds their thoughts and ideas about what symbols and tokens they experience and use to perform their ideas of “FEMALE” These questionnaires will be used as inspiration and a starting point for the writing of a first draft. The first line of the play is by Simone de Beauvoir, “One is not born, but rather, becomes a woman…..”
